Why DEF?
What DEF actually does — without the chemistry wall
Every 2010-or-newer diesel engine runs a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. Diesel Exhaust Fluid feeds it — and turns harmful exhaust into nothing but nitrogen and water.
Engine makes NOx
Burning diesel produces nitrogen-oxide (NOx) emissions that regulations cap.
DEF meets the SCR
A fine mist of DEF is injected into the exhaust stream, feeding the SCR catalyst.
Out comes clean air
NOx breaks down into harmless nitrogen and water — and you stay compliant.
Bottom line: no DEF, no run. Modern diesels derate power and eventually won't start on an empty DEF tank — keeping it filled keeps your equipment working and legal.
